Goodwood Festival of Speed Parking: Getting There from Surrey

In short: Goodwood Festival of Speed parking is in grass fields around Goodwood House, described as free at the time of writing and reached by signed event routes rather than your sat nav. Taxis are directed to Gate 1. A pre-booked car from Surrey uses that point only once this year's travel page confirms private hire may.

Goodwood’s Festival of Speed is staged in the parkland around Goodwood House, near Chichester in West Sussex, and the estate names one place for taxis to set down and collect: Gate 1. Everyone who drives in is sent to a grass field instead. Goodwood currently calls that parking free, which is welcome, but it comes with conditions. This guide works through them, then shows where a car from Surrey fits.

What does “free parking” at the Festival of Speed mean in practice?

It means no charge for the general car parks at the time of writing, not a space near the entrance. Goodwood’s getting-here page says Festival parking is free, that car parks open from 06:30 each day and that all of them are on grassland. You do not reserve a general space; signs route you to one as you arrive.

The conditions matter more than the price. Overnight parking and camping are not allowed in any car park, and parking on approach roads is not permitted at any time. The one car park sold ahead is Performance Parking, kept for selected performance cars, and the page says the 2026 allocation sold out. Goodwood reviews these arrangements, so read the official Festival of Speed getting-here page for the current year before relying on any of them, this guide included.

Where is Gate 1, and who is it for?

Gate 1 is the entrance Goodwood names for anyone arriving by taxi. Its page says all taxis should follow event signage to Gate 1, the designated drop-off and pick-up area. Shopmobility is based there too, and the courtesy shuttles inside the car parks take visitors who cannot manage the walk to Gate 1 or the nearest pedestrian gate.

Note the exact wording: the page says taxis. It does not mention pre-booked private hire, which is what XLNC Cars provides. Before we plan a Gate 1 set-down, we confirm on that year’s travel page that pre-booked private hire may use it. If the page says something different, we follow what it says.

How do you find your field without the sat nav?

By following event signs rather than a postcode. Arrival runs on a planned road network designed to keep traffic moving and send each car to the nearest field. Goodwood asks drivers not to follow their sat nav, to use only advised routes and to respect local residents, and event signage takes over as you approach the estate.

Some tickets come with a coloured car park label in the ticket wallet, and its colour shows the route to your allocated car park. With no label, you follow the public parking routes to the most convenient public car park. Those routes are in Goodwood’s downloadable parking and travel guide. The copy linked today is labelled 2025, so look for a newer edition, and note its warning that grass parking may not suit low-slung vehicles.

What time does a Festival of Speed day begin and end?

Early, and it runs well into the evening. Goodwood’s published timings are car parks from 06:30, gates at 07:00, hillclimb action from 08:30 and the event closing at 19:00. Anyone set on seeing the first runs of the morning needs an early start from Surrey, and a clear plan for getting home once the crowds leave together.

Work backwards from the part of the day that matters most to your party. Allow for the signed approach, the walk or shuttle ride from your field, and time to walk back out at the close. The same arithmetic applies whether you drive yourself or are collected.

Can you reach Goodwood without a car?

Yes, by train to Chichester, the nearest station. Goodwood points London travellers to Waterloo, changing at Havant, as the faster route, with direct trains from Victoria as well. A shuttle bus links Chichester Train Station and the event from 07:00 to 20:00, and Goodwood notes there is a cost for its bus services.

Groups travelling from further away can use Big Green Coach, which Goodwood works with to run coaches from regional hubs to the event. Seats on those are booked directly with the coach operator, not through Goodwood.

What should Blue Badge holders plan for?

Very little in advance. Goodwood says accessible parking sits at the front of every public car park and needs no pre-booking: display your Blue Badge and you will be directed to it. Visitors without a badge who have a recent mobility issue can pre-book Car Park U, near the Goodwood Hotel, through the Ticket Office.

For a passenger who would rather avoid the fields altogether, a set-down at Gate 1 also puts them beside Shopmobility, provided the year’s travel page allows pre-booked private hire to use it.

How does a chauffeur from Surrey fit around Gate 1?

As a long-distance trip into West Sussex, shaped by Goodwood’s own arrangements. Once this year’s page confirms private hire may use the Gate 1 point, your driver collects you in Surrey, follows the event signage there and meets you at the same gate at a time fixed in advance. We have no special access, passes or permits at Goodwood.

Because the Festival runs from early morning to early evening, it suits booking a driver for the full day rather than two separate journeys. Choose a Standard Saloon, Executive or VIP car for a couple or a small party, or the Minibus to keep a larger group together. For a company or client outing, our note on planning an event with chauffeur hire covers the practical side.

The price is a fixed fare, set with you before the day, and bookings are taken 24/7 from our Woking base. See chauffeur hire across Surrey for the wider service, or tell us your Festival plan with the date, pickup address and number travelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we leave the car overnight or camp in a Festival of Speed car park?

No. Goodwood's getting-here page says overnight parking and camping are not allowed in any of the Festival car parks. If your plans run into a second day, arrange somewhere to stay and a separate return journey rather than expecting to leave a car in a field.

Is a low sports car a good idea for the Festival car parks?

Think twice. The parking and travel guide linked today warns that parking is on grass and may not suit low-slung vehicles. Goodwood's separate Performance Parking is reserved for selected performance cars, and the page says the 2026 allocation sold out, so check availability early.

Can I charge an electric car at Goodwood during the Festival?

Not on site. Goodwood states that, because of where the event car parks are, it cannot offer dedicated EV charging. Arrive with enough range for the drive home, or leave your own car at home and travel by train or with a driver.

Who helps if my car will not start in a Festival car park?

The AA. Goodwood says it has the AA in all of its car parks to help with flat batteries, flat tyres and keys locked inside cars. Find a marshal on the day and they will point you to help.

Does this guide cover the Goodwood Revival or race days?

No. Goodwood Revival, the Members' Meeting and Goodwood Racecourse each have their own getting-here page on goodwood.com. Everything here comes from the Festival of Speed page, so read the right event's page before relying on any parking or drop-off detail.

How can someone with limited mobility get from the car park to the entrance?

Goodwood runs courtesy shuttles inside the car parks for people who cannot walk the distance, taking them to Gate 1 or the nearest pedestrian gate. Shopmobility is based at Gate 1, and Car Park U near the Goodwood Hotel can be pre-booked for recent mobility issues.

What if the Festival day runs later than we planned?

Goodwood lists the event ending at 19:00. Agree a collection time around that when you book, and message us on WhatsApp if you decide to leave earlier or later, so the pick-up can be moved without anyone waiting in the crowd.
