How to Get to Southampton Cruise Terminal from Surrey: Car, Train or Transfer
In short: How to get to Southampton cruise terminal from Surrey comes down to three options: drive and pre-book long-stay port parking, take the train to Southampton Central and a taxi to your terminal, or book a private transfer. Check your cruise documents first — they name the terminal, which decides the dock gate and the last leg.
Sailing from Southampton starts with two questions: which terminal is yours, and how you will get there with all that luggage. From Surrey there are three realistic answers — drive and park, catch a train to Southampton Central and a taxi to the dock, or be driven door to terminal. This guide sets out how each works, using the port’s and National Rail’s own information, and who each one suits.
Which Southampton cruise terminal am I sailing from?
Look at your cruise ticket or email confirmation — the city tourism site Visit Southampton says that is where your terminal is shown. The port has five cruise terminals — Ocean, Mayflower, QEII, City and Horizon — and a ship is allocated a terminal for each sailing, so a line you sailed with before may not use the same one again.
Your terminal decides which dock gate you use. QEII and Ocean sit in the Eastern Docks behind Dock Gate 4; City, Horizon and Mayflower sit in the Western Docks, reached through Dock Gate 10, with drivers for Mayflower also able to use Dock Gate 20. The Port of Southampton cruise page sets out all five.
Can I take the train from Surrey to Southampton?
From Woking, yes, directly. National Rail’s live departures show South Western Railway trains from Woking to Southampton Central on the London Waterloo to Weymouth line. When we checked Guildford and Farnham, the board listed no direct Southampton services, so from those stations you should expect a change. Always confirm on the National Rail journey planner for your date.
The train works well for light travellers heading to City or Horizon. It gets harder with several large cases, a change of train, or a very early embarkation time.
How do I get from Southampton Central to the ship?
A taxi is the simplest way. ABP’s terminal pages say taxis can be found on either side of the station. Distances vary by terminal: ABP puts City and Horizon at about a mile’s walk from Southampton Central, while QEII and Ocean are around two miles away — manageable without luggage, much less so with it.
Whichever terminal you are using, check its own ABP page before travel. Each one gives directions for arriving on foot and by car, and those details are more reliable than a general map pin.
Is driving and parking the simplest option?
For many people it is, provided long-stay parking is booked ahead: ABP’s terminal pages say the long-stay car park must be pre-booked. You load the car once, drive to the right dock gate, drop your cases and park. The catch is the return drive to Surrey after disembarkation.
Our route data gives a sense of the drive. Farnham is the closest Surrey town we cover, at 46 miles and typically 65 to 85 minutes; Dorking is the furthest, at 83 miles and 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 10 min. Our Southampton cruise port parking guide covers the official car parks and park-and-ride choices in detail.
How does a private transfer compare?
A private transfer takes you from your front door to your terminal’s passenger drop-off area with no train change, no station taxi queue and no car left at the port. We follow the port’s published drop-off arrangements. It suits families, groups and anyone travelling heavy, because every case stays in one vehicle from home to terminal.
XLNC Cars runs Southampton cruise terminal transfers from across Surrey at a fixed fare agreed before travel. Route pages show the distance from your town, such as Farnham to Southampton cruise terminal and Dorking to Southampton cruise terminal.
Which option suits which traveller?
There is no single right answer. It comes down to how much luggage you are taking, how many of you are sailing, whether your nearest station has a direct train, and whether anyone wants to drive home after disembarking. The table below sums up where each option tends to work and what each one asks you to plan.
| Option | Suits | Things to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Drive and park | Confident drivers, short sailings | Pre-book long-stay parking; the drive home |
| Train and taxi | Light luggage, direct-line stations | Possible change; taxi from the station |
| Private transfer | Groups, heavy luggage, no drivers | Book early; give terminal and arrival time |
When should I arrive at the cruise terminal?
Aim for your allocated arrival time. ABP’s terminal pages encourage passengers to arrive at that time, so work your journey backwards from it rather than setting off at dawn by default. Build in slack for a missed train connection or heavy traffic around the port on a busy sailing day.
When you book a transfer with us, we set the pickup time from that arrival slot and the route data for your town, and you receive it with your fixed fare.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I walk from Southampton Central station to the cruise terminals?
For some terminals it is possible. ABP puts City and Horizon at about a mile's walk from the station, but QEII and Ocean are around two miles away. With suitcases for a week or more at sea, a taxi from the station is easier; ABP calls it the easiest option for QEII and Ocean.
Do I need to change trains to reach Southampton from Surrey?
It depends on your station. Woking has direct South Western Railway services to Southampton Central. When we checked National Rail's live departures, Guildford and Farnham showed no direct trains, so passengers from those areas should expect a change. Use the National Rail journey planner for your exact date.
Is there a pedestrian entrance to the port?
Yes. ABP says anyone arriving on foot should use Dock Gate 10 for the three Western Docks terminals — Mayflower, City and Horizon. Drivers can also reach Mayflower through Dock Gate 20. For the Eastern Docks terminals, QEII and Ocean, the port directs arrivals to Dock Gate 4.
What happens if my cruise terminal changes after I book a transfer?
Terminals are allocated per sailing, so recheck your cruise documents in the days before departure. If the terminal on your paperwork changes, let us know, so the driver heads for the new terminal's drop-off area and the pickup time can be checked against the new dock gate.
Where do taxis wait at Southampton Central?
ABP's terminal pages say taxis can be found on either side of Southampton Central station. That makes the train-plus-taxi option workable without pre-booking the final leg, although on busy sailing days you may share the queue with other cruise passengers arriving on the same trains.
Should I get to the cruise terminal as early as possible?
No. The port's terminal pages ask passengers to arrive at their allocated arrival time. Turning up well before it can mean waiting around with your luggage. Plan the journey from Surrey backwards from that time, leaving a margin for traffic or a missed train connection.
Can our whole group travel to the ship together?
Yes. For families and parties sailing together, our Minibus class is designed for group travel with luggage, so everyone arrives at the terminal at the same moment. Smaller groups can use an Executive or VIP car. Tell us the headcount and luggage when you ask for a fare.
